Cowgirl of the Sandhill Story Featured in the Lodge

During World War II, life on the Sandhills was much different.

Especially with many of the men off to war.

And with ranching existing as the lifeblood of the local economy, the farms needed to continue to operate. And the women of this region stepped up to the plate.

On April 11, 1945, the Chicago Daily News published a story titled, “Cowgirl of the Sandhill.” It featured the steadfast women who kept life in the Nebraska prairie moving while the war endured in Europe.

The ranch featured in the story is just a few miles south of our Club.

Fellow member Steve Johnson framed an original copy of the story. Steve’s mother is featured in the article.

He lent it to the Club and it now sits proudly in our Lodge. Next time you’re on your way to grab a meal, stop by and check it out. It’s on the lefthand side of the hallway as you enter the Caprock Lounge.

It’s an incredible story. And it’s just another part of the wonderful history around this place.
